Fall Follow-up Meeting 2009

At our last meeting held on September 12, 2009, a guest lecturer from the Anthropological Studies Center at Sonoma State University shared three "History in Color" trunks that focused on a specific ethnic group and time period in California history. These trunks contained a set of puzzles, artifacts, primary documents and accompanying lesson plans and worksheets for "hands-on" sharing with students. Even though the grant has ended, these boxes can be reserved through SSU. Also, participants were asked how they would use the Washington D.C. experience in the classroom. Most notable comments included appreciation for the education centered activity prepared and instructed by the Monticello staff and a deeper awareness after touring the museum and battlefields at Gettysburg.

Summer Field Trip to Washington D.C. - July 2009

Thirty-six participants traveled to Washington D.C. and surrounding areas on July 2-9, 2009. Participants were given the opportunity to visit and research at any of the historical sites. Two group activities were required: Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center. Not required, but attended by most was Senator Feinstein's Constituent Breakfast and Capitol Tour. Educators from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello prepared a thematic, curriculum-based education program focused specifically for the 8th and 11th grade teachers with a guided tour of Monticello and the grounds. The itinerary at Gettysburg included viewing Pickett's Charge in the Cyclorama and "A New Birth of Freedom" in the Visitor Center, a self-guided tour of the museum, and a guided bus tour of the battlefields.

Summer Field Trip to Fort Ross - 2008

In Year Two, participants traveled to the Fort Ross State Historic Park, a Russian-American Settlement for a "hands-on" two-day experience. This settlement was established at Metini, a centuries-old Kashaya Pomo coastal village. A guest speaker lectured on The Kashaya Pomo Cultural Landscape and two Kashay elders shared information on their culture.

TAH-Mendocino Participants Visit National Archives

Twenty-nine participants of the Teaching American History Project ~ Mendocino visited the National Archives and Records Administration in San Bruno on Saturday, January 12. For many teachers, this was the first time visiting the regional archives which is a depository and center for research in historical records from federal agencies and courts.

After a brief tour of the facility, the TAH teachers were inserviced on the use of primary sources. Teachers selected from a sample of the California curriculum-related teacher research topics. The participants had access to hands-on research of original documents from a variety of topics including the Chinese and Hispanic Immigrations, World War II, and the Espionage Act of 1917. Each group prepared a brief summary of findings and presented to the group.
